Sighted: 2nd October 2003, Swamp near SAIACS
Porphyrio porhyrio is also known as the Purple Swamphen, African Purple Swamphen, Purple Gallinule or Purple Coot. It is also known as the Sultana Bird.
This was the first bird Dr. Wood and I spotted on our first birdwatching trip near the swamp. The bird looked dark blue in the evening light, but once we got closer it was definitely purple, with a red bill and white behind. It's a heavy bird and sticks to the ground mostly and to a group.
