6. Grey Heron

Sighted: 2nd October 2003
Location: Swamp near SAIACS
Family: Ardeidae


The large bird's pinkish-yellow bill apparently turns brighter in breeding adults. I learned today that grey heron's long retracted neck is characteristic of herons and bitterns, and distinguishes them from storks, cranes and spoonbills, which extend their necks. Hmm... should use that bit of information the next time.
